Broken DIY Striper on Honda Self Propelled Lawn Mower

I broke my DIY lawn striping kit on my Honda HRX217. I’ll be upgrading the design to be sturdy this week. Making your own striping kit is easy so I’ll be sure to video so you guys can see how I do it.

With the lawn being 2.5 inches it wasn’t long enough to see the stripes. It was just a faint striping, hard to see with my sunglasses on. But next time I’m going up a notch and I’ll be sure to report back with the new lawn striping kit 😉

The Milorganite Mistake Many People are Making

When using milorganite organic fertilizer it’s best to read the label! The rate on the bag is a suggestion, a starting point. But a good milorganite application will be with your spreader set to the highest setting.

Organic slow release fertilizers won’t burn your lawn, they won’t volatilize like synthetics, and they feed the microbes in the soil which then feeds the lawn. It’s the perfect lawn fertilizer!

Replacing Lawn Mower Blades on the Honda HRX217

Today I’m showing you how to use a torque wrench to replace the lawn mower blades on your Honda HRX217 lawn mower. This process is the same whether you are replacing with new blades or sharpening lawn mower blades and putting them back on.

I used to use a lawn mower blade sharpening service because I thought it was more difficult than this. Once you learn how to do it, you’ll be able to get it done in minutes without spending more! Here is my how to sharpen lawn mower blades video:

Elite Kentucky Bluegrass Rhizomes

One of the cool things about Kentucky Bluegrass are the Rhizomes. To me, this is the magic of KBG. The grass will send out rhizomes to fill in bare spots giving you a tightly knit lawn without having to keep starting the process over from grass seed.

Every time I go and inspect the lawn I’m finding more kentucky bluegrass rhizomes that are filling in new spots, and the existing grass is getting thicker and thicker. It really is amazing.

My lawn is made from Bewitched, Blue Velvet, and Prosperity varieties of Kentucky Bluegrass from SeedSuperStore.com! They have a cool custom blend maker tool that I used to get that specific blend.

Using Milorganite to Apply Epsom Salt to your lawn

When you do a soil test sometimes you need to apply micronutrients or macronutrients to the soil. And sometimes it’s at such a small rate that is a bit difficult to spread out evenly. Mixing the nutrient with Milorganite is a great way to ensure even coverage.

How to sharpen lawn mower blades

Sharpening lawn mower blades is a lot easier than I used to think. I used to bring them to a shop to get sharpened. I’ve tried sharpening blades with a bench grinder, with a blade sharpening tool, and found sharpening blades with an angle grinder to be the best way.

The angle grinder with a flap disc is much easier to get around the shape of mulching blades on the Honda HRX217. When I used the bench grinder I always had trouble keeping the correct grinding angle on the bends.

Now with the flap disc and the angle grinder I can sharpen the blades quickly and without much thinking. I get them sharp and ready to go in a few minutes. I’m nobody special when it comes to sharpening blades so if I can do it, you can too!

Lawn Renovation Update

Want a deep green like this? I used Kentucky Bluegrass, Bewitched/Blue Velvet/Prosperity varieties from http://ift.tt/2c6c9U9

I can honestly say the color green these varieties are producing is beyond what I thought it would be. It’s hard to explain but in person it’s way cool!

Reel Mower vs Rotary Mower – Which is Better?

A Reel Mower vs a Rotary Mower, both have pros, both have cons, but which should you be using if you want the perfect lawn?

Reel mowers give a very clean cut on the grass blades and outperform rotary mowers when it comes to close, short cutting.

Rotary mowers mulch tall grass with ease and reduce the frequency of mowing needed.

Me personally, I use both a gas push mower and a manual reel mower. Sometimes I like to see the grass flinging and mow often, but most of the time I go with the Honda HRX217 on my Kentucky Bluegrass!

How to identify poa annua in your lawn

Once you’ve identified poa annua in your lawn, killing poa annua is actually pretty easy. Also known as annual bluegrass, poa annua has a light green color to it and distinctive seed heads.

Poa annua weed control is best done with a pre-emergent in the fall, and tenacity herbicide in the spring.

Killing weeds with a weed wick

Weed wicks are a simple tool to make spot killing weeds easier. They prevent drift onto other plants and are especially useful with plants that spread through rhimezomes and can’t pull to remove them.
