How to get rid of weeds in the lawn

The best way to kill weeds is to start by killing the most weeds first, and then moving on to harder to kill weeds. Getting rid of weeds is actually easier than most people think

First – Get a generic weed killer like weed be gone plus crabgrass killer. Spray all the weeds in your lawn. After a week or two you will have killed most if not all of the weeds.

Second – If you have nutsedge in your lawn, get the ortho nutsedge killer. This will get rid of many more weeds that are harder to kill. A week later go around ad spot spray again to make sure you get rid of them.

If you don’t have nutsedge, or have other hard to kill weeds, get ortho chickweed, clover, and oxalis killer. And do the same thing. Spray it to kill the weeds, and followup about a week later. (harder to kill weeds usually take 2 applications).

Third – If by now there are still weeds to get rid of, come to The Lawn Forum and post photos. We’ll help you identify the tricky weeds and how to kill them. Many of the weeds in this category people don’t bother killing. But if you want that perfect lawn, you want that perfect lawn, so we’ll tell you how to get rid of them 😉

Before and After Moving KBG Plugs

A few days after moving plugs, and then a few days after that at the end! Moving Kentucky Bluegrass plugs with the Proplugger, and then frequently applying milorganite fertilizer, and mowing often, has caused the KBG to fill in bare spots naturally.

You can also use fast release fertilizer, and “spoon feed” it, but I’ve been using milorganite because I have a lot of it and I don’t have to worry about burning the lawn.

How to edge and mulch around a tree

This is how to edge around a tree and mulch around a tree. It’s pretty simple, but it gives a clean look without any fancy tools or equipment. You could even do this with a regular shovel, the edger I use just makes it a bit easier to do.

How to get rid of nutsedge in the lawn, the easy way!

To get rid of nutsedge or nutgrass in your lawn, I prefer using the Ortho Nutsedge Killer For Lawns in a Ready-To-Spray bottle. It’s super easy to kill nutsedge with and it’s convenient.

There are other products that will kill it if you have a large infestation. Tenacity and sedgehammer work great too. But for most people you can’t beat the convenience of the ready to spray bottle. No extra nutsedge killer to worry about after you are done spraying. No mixing, no reading, just put it on your hose and spray the nutsedge!

That’s how to get rid of nutsedge in your lawn, the easy way 😉

How to Fix an Ugly Lawn in 5 Easy Steps

It’s easy to fix an ugly lawn if you learn the proper techniques. There are 5 steps to reviving a lawn. The more steps you complete, the better your lawn will be!

All the videos mentioned in this video are on this easy playlist:

Step 1: Proper Mowing – Ensure your blades are sharp, and that you are mulch mowing at the highest height possible with your mower.

Step 2: Proper Watering – You should be watering 1in of water per week. But to know if you’re watering enough, do the tuna can test. If you are, and you still see dry spots, use a soil conditioner to allow the water to penetrate the soil.

Step 3: Proper Fertilizing – Want the easy method? Apply milorganite 4 times per year. Boom. Done. No really, you can apply it any time that fits your schedule. Some people like to do it a week or two before every holiday, birthday party, etc, so when family and friends are over the lawn is looking sharp!

Step 4: Killing and Preventing Weeds – This is where most people get it wrong! And it’s so easy. The simple method would be to apply Step 1 (crabgrass preventer) when the forsythia blooms (or as soon after as you can). Then use the “ready to spray” weed sprays starting with the one that kills crabgrass, and then moving on to the harder weeds. Just leave a few weeks in between to allow your grass to not get stressed. Easy!

Step 5: Overseed in the fall. After completing Step 4 you’re likely to have areas in the lawn with no grass. It happens! But lucky for you seeding in the fall is very easy to do. Some people will just throw the seed down and water it. I prefer applying a layer of peat moss on top. Aerator? Fall is the perfect time to aerate and overseed!

That’s all there is to it. You can do this! By this time next year you’ll be watching the rest of my videos to take your good lawn to perfection. (Sorry, it’s an addiction. The better your lawn looks, the more you’ll want to see how far you can go with it!)

Organically Preventing Lawn Disease with Serenade

I’m a big fan of building up the soil ecosystem to be a healthy lush soil. Part of that is encouraging good bacteria to grow which prevents bad bacterias and diseases from growing.

By using a biofungicide like Serenade you are building up the good bacteria levels giving your lawn a great environment to grow in.

Application Rates: Between 1-4oz per k, Every 1-4 weeks. Wait what? Organics like this can be applied at any rate, but in general the amount you apply of Serenade will depend on the weather conditions. If it’s wetter and the conditions for disease are higher, you’ll want to apply more of it. If it’s dry and you don’t have disease pressure, a lower amount will do.
