Day 36: Tenacity Follow Up Application with Scott’s Starter Fertilizer plus Weed Preventer

Normally I would apply tenacity in liquid form, but I was having problems with my backpack sprayer and didn’t have the time to figure it out. (videos to come!!) I opted to use the Scott’s Starter Fertilizer with weed preventer because it contains mesotrione, the chemical name for Tenacity, in it. This will help prevent weeds from cropping in.

Reel Mowing The Lawn With A Reel Mower

Cutting the lawn at 1 inch with a reel mower will help your lawn thicken up quicker. Let’s be honest, reel mowing is pure fun too. It’s also safe to have the kiddos help as things aren’t being flung at high speeds.

My friend gave me his scott’s reel mower so I can cut it early and often. My rotary mower won’t cut this low without cutting ruts or tearing things up.

How to get rid of weeds in a new lawn

When you plant new grass seed everyone gets weeds. There are ways to prevent more but today I’m going to show you how I spot treat the weeds in a new lawn. By spot treating I’m not harming the new grass but I’m taking care of the weeds.

When to mow new grass

After a renovation everyone always asks when they can mow new grass. The easiest rule to go by is mow when the grass reaches 3in down to 2in.

When mowing new grass with a reel mower you can start sooner than that, generally cut it down to 1in when it reaches 2in.

Or, if you are bored like me, you can cut new grass with scissors! It’s actually entertaining and relaxing..

Epic First Urea Feeding on New Grass

The lawn is continuing to progress and showing signs that it’s ready to leave sprout and pout. I decided to give it a small dose of fast release urea. I’m then going to followup every week with a dose of fast release urea, slowly increasing the amount.

This tactic is used by many to really optimize the fall fertilization schedule. Rather than dump all the fertilizer in one go, it’s spoon feeding the urea weekly. This actually reduces the amount of fertilizer runoff and waste, as the grass can actually use all the nitrogen in the smaller doses.

For normal lawns I’ll do 1lb per k of urea, which is half a pound of nitrogen per k. For the renovation I’m starting at half that and working up to that rate, until “the pause” when the grass stops growing vertically.

Calibrating the Wizz Battery Operated Hand Spreader

Scott’s Wizz Spreader is a handy handheld spreader but it holds a different amount of product than other spreaders. Using milorganite to calibrate your spreader is a safe and easy way to ensure you’re putting down the correct amount of product.

When to change the watering schedule on a renovation

Proper lawn watering is crucial no matter how old the lawn is, but when you are doing a lawn renovation the normal watering tips don’t apply. You need light, frequent watering to get the grass to germinate.

When to fertilize new grass after a renovation

New grass needs the proper fertilizer to establish and grow, but putting it down too soon can lead to problems. The key is to look for signs the grass sprouts are telling you before beginning fertilizing.

If you’ve decided when to fertilize new grass seed, it’s important to start slow. I prefer the first app to be an organic, non burning fertilizer like milorganite or bay state fertilizer.
