Lawn mowing Kentucky bluegrass frequently is a great way to encourage it to thicken up and spread out. Cutting grass tips stimulates the lawn to spread out.

The Honda HRX217 self-propelled lawn mower is a champ at mulching wet grass. Sometimes you have to mow when it’s not ideal. With all the wet weather we’ve had I’m mowing short to keep fungus and lawn disease away.

The gypsy moth invasion of 2017 has begun. I kill gypsy moth caterpillars with an organic spray. It is easily available in stores as Bt For Caterpillars (Thuricide). You must re-apply it every 1-2 weeks.

Be sure to spray under and over the leaves to kill any eggs or baby caterpillars before they get to be large. The bacteria will eat away at them and kill them.

For gypsy moths wrapping trees is not effective as they don’t go up and down the trees often.

Moving plugs of your Kentucky Bluegrass into areas that have been damaged or had germination problems is a great way to thicken up the entire lawn without having to start from seed.

Kentucky Bluegrass (and many warm season grasses) will naturally spread out and fill in the holes made by the plugger, and the grass plugs will fill in the surrounding area as well.

The ProPlugger is a tool that makes this process incredibly easy. It stores plugs inside itself so you can do about 10 plugs at a time vs the one at a time of a bulb plugger.

Before you consider lawn germination blankets, consider using peat moss and a tackifier. The tackifier will hold the peat moss and prevent erosion while seeding. It also allows the grass seed to easily germinate.

With germination blankets, you can actually over water or smother the grass seed. I did in a previous video where I tried out the blankets. Using the tackifier proved to be way cheaper, and it actually worked!

The key to controlling grub worms in your lawn is to kill lawn grubs and then prevent lawn grubs. Many people make the mistake of not doing both.

The first step to get rid of lawn grubs is to kill them when you see them in your lawn. The fast acting 24hour products will do this. They won’t prevent lawn grubs, but they will kill them. Unfortunately the grubs most likely laid eggs so you’ll need to prevent those.

When to apply grub killer depends on the product you use. The Grubex1 product you need to apply the middle of spring to early summer. This will prevent lawn grubs from hatching next season, but it won’t kill grubs already in the lawn.

If you take this two-prong approach and continue to use the Grubex1 yearly, the population of white grubs will dramatically decrease until you should be able to not need to prevent them anymore!

Today I’m mulch mowing at 2 inches with my Honda Self propelled Lawn Mower. The new grass is coming in great, and the Honda HRX217 cleans it up nice!

Lawn mowers surge for many reasons, and before you go pulling apart everything like I did, try this simple fix. If it doesn’t work, you spent 7 bucks, but if it does work then you saved yourself a whole lot of time and effort.

The ProPlugger crew sent me the ProPlugger 5-IN-1 Planting Tool to try out. I’ve heard great things about this product, and can’t wait to start using it more. So far, I’m really well pleased with how it works and feels.

Moving lawn plugs can be a tedious task but the ProPlugger is designed well. It takes the strain off your back from bending over and stores the plugs internally so you can make for some fast grass plugging.

I’ll be using this tool frequently with my lawn renovation, to fill in the larger areas where grass seed washed away or didn’t germinate.

The Tenacity Seeding Rate is 4oz per Acre. Applying Tenacity during seeding as a pre emergent will prevent weeds from growing but allow good grass to grow. You can then followup spray at 4 weeks to continue weed prevention, which should last long enough for you to get regular pre emergent down.
